Who are we?
The John Wesley Community Centre (JWCC) is situated in Etwatwa which is approximately 20 km from Benoni on the East Rand. The Centre was originally founded by the Women for Peace Organisation in 1994. In 2004 the JWCC was handed over to the Northfield Methodist Church and has become part of their Mission and Outreach project.
The John Wesley Community Centre is a registered Non-Profit Organisation and a Public Benefit Organisation. Donations to the Centre are tax deductable in terms of Section 18 (A) of the Income Tax Act and contributions qualitfy for the relevant BBBEE scorecard Socio-Economic and Enterprise Development points.
What we do?
We offer a holistic program of activities to surround orphans and vulnerable children with people who understand and care about them. We strive to support children affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic from the time their parents become too ill to take care of them. We believe that education, training and creating awareness of HIV/AIDS and the need for a responsible lifestyle is the key to prevent the spread of the virus. The Centre is also a focal point for other community organisations and caregivers addressing the daily realities of HIV/AIDS. We work with other organisations to provide an integrated service to children, their families and community affected or infected by the virus.
Our day to day experiences of the ravages caused by HIV/AIDS and the vulnerability of the children, spur us on in our endeavours to bring a meaningful and lasting change to as many lives as we possibly can.
Our Services and Projects:
Psycho-Social and Educational Activities
Each one of our children is under the guidance of a locally trained supervisor and administered by our fully trained Project Coordinator. This is an ongoing process of meeting physical , emotional, social, mental and spiritual needs, all of which are considered vital foundations for positive human development.
Pastoral Care:
This unit often accompanies the caregivers on their home visits and ministers to the family where HIV/AIDS has affected the household.
Play Therapy:
Play Therapy offers troubled children non-directive therapy with appropriately trained lay therapists, under the supervision and control of a registered clinical psychologist who evaluates and assesses the children.
After-School Care:
The After-School care unit provides a nutritious meal and structured activities for approximately two hundred and twenty children on weekdays during the school term. During the school holidays some children come to the Centre for most of the day and those caregivers not involved in counselling and home visitation provide activities for the children. The Centre also offers a gym and trampoline club, assistance with homework, educational television, music, cultural activities and a fully functional library, including reading lessons.
Computer Training Facility:
The Centre has a state of the art computer training facility that was donated and set up by Rotary. The After-School children receive computer lessons as part of their program and adults can enrol for training in the mornings. One of our goals is to offer internet access in the future and train people in matters like internet banking, online CV creation and job applications.
Counseling and Home Visitations:
Counseling and home visits are done regularly by the Social Auxiliary Workers and Caregivers of the JWCC.
Training Unit:
The training unit provides a basic training program in HIV/AIDS awareness and life skills to community members, caregivers, foster parents and high school children at local schools. External organisations provide specialised training in fire fighting, basic First Aid, Tuberculosis and drug abuse, creating a greater awareness of leading a responsible lifestyle.
Pre-School
The Pre-School provides a basic School Readiness programme for about fifty learners aged two-six years, and is also a safe place for vulnerable children and orphans. The children are provided with a meal on a daily basis and HIV/AIDs affected households are supplied with food parcels. The children are introduced to computers and receive very basic training.
The School motto is: "We are the future - help us realise it!"
