Emmaus
What is the walk to Emmaus? In Luke 24 we read the story of the risen Christ appearing to two disciples, walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. He explained the Scriptures and their hearts were warmed. Their eyes were only fully opened to recognise Him, when Christ took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Filled with joy, they rushed back to Jerusalem to share the news with the other disciples. This is the image of Emmaus. What is the purpose of Emmaus? To inspire, challenge and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, church and workplace. Who should go to Emmaus? Growing Christians who are open to experiencing the grace and love of God in new ways through Christian community. More especially, it is for those who will be committed to making a difference as a result of the experience. What happens at Emmaus? The 'Walk to Emmaus' is a 72 hour experience, spent studying, discussing, worshipping and living together at Emseni Retreat Centre in Kempton Park. 15 talks are delivered by clergy and laity, which forms the basis of discussion and projects. Holy Communion is celebrated daily and a fuller understanding of the presence of Christ in the body of His believers begins to develop. The prayers and acts of love and of a living support community enhances the experience. What is the cost of the Weekend? For 2009, the cost is R600.00 which includes accommodation, food and supplies. If the R600. 00 cannot be raised, subsidy may be applied for from the Emmaus Board. In such cases, the applicant is required to raise at least 50%.
