Our Statement of Faith

God ordained and established the Church universal and Northfield Methodist Church in particular. We hold to an orthodox Christian faith.

As the Northfield Methodist Church, we understand ourselves to be a local company of the disciples of Jesus, the creation of the Holy Spirit, the Body and Bride of Christ, which is also described in the New Testament as the People of God.

We confess the Headship of our Lord Jesus Christ, and acknowledge the Divine revelation recorded in Holy Scripture, as the supreme ruler of our faith and practice.

We are at once both evangelical and sacramental, thereby recognising our primary vocation of declaring the gospel of a free full present salvation for everyone who repents and believes upon our Lord Jesus Christ, and observing two sacraments, namely, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

We pray for the renewed heart in every person
and seek to build a living fellowship of all disciples of Jesus, under the leading and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. We teach the possibility, here and now, of Christians being made ‘perfect in love’, through the obedience of faith.

Our witness is in line with God’s call to the Methodist Church of South Africa, to work towards a Christ-Healed Africa and to this end we are growing a People of God for Benoni and Beyond. The New Testament truth of the Priesthood of believers convinces us that every disciple is a minister, and that ministry is collective and collegial. However, ‘as the Spirit wishes, different gifts are given to each person’.
